How do Braces Work?

Do Braces Move Your Teeth?

Teeth movement is dependent on the amount of pressure which is put on the springs, elastics and archwires. With today’s technology, new advanced materials can prevent the need for frequent adjusting of some braces. Other types may still require adjustments often.

A flexible archwire places pressure on teeth, guiding them in the desired direction of movement. As they begin to move into place, these flexible archwires may be replaced with stiffer ones to put greater pressure on the teeth. Once aligned, a firm archwire is put into place to hold the teeth in the proper position while the jawbone adjusts. This process can take several months.
